Os grid reference NY.402 155. The following site is the garden of a private farmhouse at Crookabeck Farm, Rooking, Patterdale, Cumbria. [Please remember this is the garden of a private premises and please respect that]. A local farmer has made himself a very interesting prehistoric rock garden. Over the years he has laboured to make this nice garden that has standing stones (possibly old gate posts) some of which are up to 2 metres high - and arranged to look as if they are true prehistoric standing stones. But, the best part of the story is that whilst clearing the garden he came upon a section of rock outcrop that had cup-marks upon it. His neighbours further down the hill also found a rock outcrop in their garden again bearing small and large cup-marks and what are perhaps shallow grooves. Later, two more sites were found further down the valley again with rock-art carvings. The Patterdale area was long thought to be lacking in prehistoric rock-art, but now all that has changed. The farmer now has a particularly interesting garden on his hands. The owner is, however, preserving these ancient stones for posterity.
