We're going for a walkabout to look at some sites in & around the Pateley Bridge area, North Yorkshire, next Thursday, i.e., August 18, 2011, to meet up at midday - somewhere to be defined by Tricia & co.! Cool

Takes me ages to get these OS numbers but finally managed it at last!
We could meet at Yorkes Folly Info Centre first:- Meet at info point ref;- SE155602 Yorke Folly...11.30am?

Don't know if car parking available there or not....think there was some gravel ground but not sure...

On to High Crag on top of moors ........ there certainly isn't any car parking at the footpath we take to see the magnificent boulder stone resting on worn away pedestal a fraction its size underneath, at High Crag Ridge....I had to park at side of road, but it isn't very busy so shouldn't cause any probs.

I always wondered where Yorkshire tourism got this boulder from when featured in the ads on telly. It's magnificent in real life and has amazing energy around it, including wot looks like stone circle remains with off centre boulder aligning solstice sunrise, or else at Lammas sunrise also possible.... A look on the map shows this boulder is sort of naturally aligned with Brimham rocks....but then I'm a novice when it comes to locating with OS maps...so don't take my word for it!

There's a few standing stones that could be menhirs...or not....and loadsa stuff that needs exploring up there for cup markings, one stone has ''v'' groove as in old stone ''ley way'' signposting and points out North South way as well, and some old ruins
near disused quarry as well as an intriquing circle of more stones beyond that I couldn't quite make out...so lots to look at but the moorland here is covered in blossoming heather...smells musky and sweet, and there are lots of holes and ridges and ledges beneath so maybe a walking stick to prod ground underfoot would be in order for elf and safety.
If anyone has an OS map of around here it would be good to see what the hills are that have pairs of tall stones stand upon the distant horizon---some might be recent rather than prehistoric......
Maybe we could meet at 11 30am as it would be good to get a bearing at true mid day at the rocks to find proper north south bearing?

Hi Tricia, yes I’m up for a look around, plus picnic and a bottle of wine, as I’ve never been to that area.
Can I query the meet up point ? is the Yorkes Folly Info Centre, 2-07 miles South of Yorkes Folly ?
as SE 155 602 which I've marked with the red flag below is
    Walkabout on August 18, 2011 - Pateley Bridge, N.Yorks 155602
Here’s a bigger map showing the folly at SE 15620 63521
Walkabout on August 18, 2011 - Pateley Bridge, N.Yorks HighCragRidge
another point don’t forget “Summer time” if you want 12 noon, and the Buggers are talking of adding another hour so “Summer time” will be plus 2 hours and only taking one off in winter ! supposedly so the banks and offices will have the same dinner time as Germany ! and as someone who’s interested in, and makes Sundials – “What a load of Bollocks ! let the Germans knock an hour off “ I think it’s away of disrupting our natural Circadian rhythm,
I can post a larger map if required ? hoping to hear back from you – best wishes Danny

OK - count us in! 11.30am seems fine by me Tricia! Wink We could p'raps make it even earlier? 11am?

Danny - it'll be good seeing you & Teddy again! spot-on I think we'll bring a fine bottle of our own aswell. It'll be a new experience for me - wandering the moors imbibing fine wines and checking out cup&rings. toxic We've gotta check out the ones in Guidescliff Woods while we're there.

Hiya Danny....bottle wine sounds great....yep that's the Yorke Folly the info centre is nearby the folly itself just a board with info on it. There is a signpost to the info place so you wont go far wrong as long as you are in the direction of the Folly which is easy to see..the flag near the school on the top map you post is nowhere near the folly........

Sorry couldn't get the map posted which showed the info centre though did try, think I might have to sign up to OS website or something to post them but haven't had time...hope this makes sense?
Didn't know you made sundials.......can you bring a portable one??? Mid Day for the sun will be about 1pm summer watch time....but there will be a little shadow and we need to get some stones lined up for markouts before mid day actually arrives just so we get approximates anyway.

Hi Tricia don't forget the grid reference rhyme :- " Along the corridor then up the stair" in other words after the sheet letters
Walkabout on August 18, 2011 - Pateley Bridge, N.Yorks Nationalgrid
you give the Eastings first that's to the right then the Northings thats upwards, so putting the grid ref. you gave into Mem. Map generated the flag.

    Hi Danny -

Hope you've recovered after the Triffid-bracken Expedition! I'm doing a brief write-up of the cairns we found yesterday and would be most grateful for the grid-ref for Site 1, the singular cairn. I've only got an 8-fig grid ref for it.

    Cheers - Paul Cool
