Any ideas?

Hi....This weekend whilst rersearching for an ancient `lost` Cross, I found this literally a hundred yards from its supposed site. The owners of the driveway in which it sits, say that it has been there for at least sixty years that they know of.

The thing is, that although this looks like it could possibly be part of the base for the Cross, I`m beginning to wonder if maybe it could have been used in an earlier kind of Pagan ritualistic way, then the Cross being added to it as an addition, at a later date?
Has anyone any come across anything similar, or if not then any suggestions would be most welcome.

I`m not altogether sure whether or not the uploading of Jpeg photos onto the site is a regular problem or not. This is the third time of trying to, but unfortunately to no avail. I shall try again tomorrow, hopefully with more success.

Yes Viking Orm, could you possibly give us a bit my detail with regard to the area where you found the cross-base, possibly with a Os grid reference that is close to or approx. Sounds like an interesting find.

At the moment I would rather keep the source and whereabouts of the `Stone` to myself for now. At least until I have figured out, or at least have a better idea of its true age and its use(s). Not to mention that this is on someones elses private property, as I`m sure you will understand I would rather just send pictures to the site and hopefully receive some expert opinion.

I think this stone, and any other artefacts, should be recorded as part of our historical and archaeological past/heritage. They should be looked at by people who know what they are and from when they date, and properly recorded by the appropriate authorities, namely a museum where there are proffessional people working to identify these artefacts from our past. Just keeping them hidden away, like relics, is not the correct procedure.I don't know what the "law" is with regard to keeping these locked away. They should be on display in a museum for the general public to view.

Another idea on what it could be ... a Stoop ... sort of Holy Water font often found on pilgrimage routes ... Catlow is on one such route ...

Hi John,

I am infact away on my hols at the moment. As I said previously, I think it would be in the best interests of the owners and everyone, that the location remains unknown for now at least. I was asked initially to respect the farmers wishes which I intend to honour. He is infact a friend of the family, so that ultimately means that my hands are pretty much tied at the moment. When I get back I shall have words with the farmer to try and talk him round and will keep you up to speed with any developements regarding its identity.
