EH are running a blog about the Roman dig at Silbury
    http://latersilbury.wordpress.com/

    EH info
    http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/professional/research/archaeology/silbury/roman-period/

The dig will last until early September and I will be covering it on the Avebury Forum.
I spoke to the guards today and warned them that there are people in the area friday/saturday night that like to mooch around the WHS with their handheld metal detectors early in the morning. Photos have been supplied for them to look out for.

Thanks for the info Pete. Much appreciated.

Did you have to tell em about mi weekend wanders?..... and to tell them that my hand held device that buzzes when it hits the spot, was a metal detector was a spot of great thinking.
I'll keep an eye out for the guards. Do they wear sexy uniforms?
I'm a bit worried about the photo's though affraid

Roman Silbury dig Empty an observation - final I hope

Post  fachtna Mon Sep 19, 2011 1:30 pm

Hello all - it is interesting that English Heritage has now found it necessary and justifiable to devote so much of its scarce resource to the excavation (and thus destruction) of evidence revealed by geophysical survey for later occupation/activities adjacent to Silbury Hill.

This evidence first came to light when I was (temporarily) Inspector of Ancient Monuments for Silbury and requested that this type of survey should take place before the set up of the infrastructure for the 2007 phase of the Silbury conservation work in the field to the north of the Hill.

In my other Silbury role as manager of the archaeological aspects of the Conservation Project (and after I had ceased to be the Inspector) I suggested that it might be informative and helpful if we did at least expose and perhaps partially excavate some of this evidence. However my suggestion was strongly rejected by some of my colleagues within the conservation project team and was not pursued.

It seems that views within English Heriatge on the appropriateness of this excavation work have changed considerably since I was peremptorily removed from the Silbury Conservation Project in 2007 (see http://sites.google.com/site/anotherstoryfromsilburyhill/)

sorry to go with this topic again

    regards to all
