EASINGTON FELL, SADLER HILL LARGE STONE CAIRN SD 719 493
Known as 'The Roman Tower'. Large 3m Height, 14m diameter cairn of stones. On the SE section a shooting but has been established, but no longer used.
'The Roman Antiquities of Overborough' 1746, Rev. Richard Rauthmell - thought the cairn to be the remains of a 'ancient fort or watch tower'.
He also noted: 'some unusual long mounds' on the top of Birket Fell (SD 690 469)
and: 'two tall bee-hive tumuli, built of rough stones known as "Old Ned & The Wife".' - these two cairns of stones have been much reduced in my lifetime. They are now only a fraction of what they used to be being 'spoiled' by treasure seekers over the years. (SD 725 485).
