Pendle Ridgeway ' SOLAR WHEEL OF THE YEAR' Cup-Marked (x8) Stone SD 774 385

    HOW TO GET THERE:

NICK OF PENDLE TO ' SOLAR WHEEL OF THE YEAR STONE'

Walk down the Sabden road to enter a trackway on L opposite Parsley Barn gateway. Walk up a short way to take path on R as track veers to the L. The path leads one down to cross a trackway & on down to meet with a mettled trackway. Just before meeting with the lower trackway (at a point of about 30 yards) look over to the left to see a large stone in the moorland grasses.

Deerstones Cragg can be seen up ahead.

Here you will find a large stone with 8 cup-marks that form a circle.

I looked again yesterday at this stone and indeed 8 well worn cups in a circle can be clearly seen, but I am yet to be convinced that they are 'the hand of man' and not natural.

Above this stone are a spread of other stones, many with cup marks.

During the 19th century it was very common in Yorkshire to manufacture cup & ring marks, etc, as is the case with many carvings around Ilkley during the period when it was a spa town for the wealthy - 'Flint Knap Jacks' originated in Yorkshire. In Lancashire this form of roguery was unknown, thus we can view stone settings in their natural form. This is not to say that some of the Yorkshire markings are not original, but they must be viewed with a great deal of Titus Salt!

The Northumberland rock carvings have little in common with those of Ilkley Moor

I wouldn't mind a look at this - even if they are natural.

'Where there is dismemberment in the beginning there is remembrance at the end - that the fulfillment or consummation of the cosmic game is the discovery of what was covered and the recollection of what was scattered.'

Sadly these are .303 bullet scars - not cups.

    Very true,

Above the site, just above the old quarries, are the slip trenches from WW11

A WW11 site survey of the hill would prove worthwhile

    Good work

Home Guard/Regular Army training records are hard to come by. There's a problem over the hill on the side of Rombalds Moor where geophys has turned up loads of mortar rounds...
