Post  phaeton Sun Sep 22, 2013 3:22 pm

    Hi,

I've seen a reference to "Monzie, Perthshire [stone circle including a megalith] called "The Witch's Stone," and shows on its surface several cup excavations, and two or three markings which are regarded in the district as the impressions of the Witch's feet". But I couldn't see a reference to these footprints at this link?

    http://megalithix.wordpress.com/2011/04/24/monzie/

    Can anybody help please?

    Thanks,

    P

Book I saw was 'Archaic Sculpturings' by J Y Simpson (page 184), 1867.

    Hi Phaeton -

There's a damn good paperback on the Monzie & related sites you can get from Andrew Finlayson. Check it here -

Wow, there's loads! Thanks Danny Smile

No, I am very far from Bonny Scotland, but if I visited I'd also like to see the big wildlife park, near Stirling I think it is?

Interesting no-one else mentions the footprints (yet - maybe a reference in the literature somewhere?) I presume folks were looking at contiguous cup marks and seeing them as heel and ball of a foot?

    Great stuff!

Naathen - yer gonna have to forgive me with this one Phaeton. I was actually thinking of a different stone to the site you've asked about. Is the cup-and-ring in question with the "footprints" the one illustrated here, on page 92:

    http://archaeologydataservice.ac.uk/archives/archiveDownload?t=arch-352-1/dissemination/pdf/vol_016/16_079_156.pdf&

We'll try and get over to the sites here in the next few days and get some photos of the place, then I'll put it on TNA when I get back outta the mountains.

    Thanks Paulus,

That is extremely helpful, is it known which journal (?) those 'Notes' by J R Allen were taken from please?

I originally thought the larger cup marked stone 'A' (JRA p91) was the 'footprint' stone because there are overlapping cupmarks on one corner. But yes - as you say - his stone 'B' (JRA p92) has numerous double-circle impressions on it which must be what gave rise to the local impression of footprints?

So where in all this is the Monzie 'Witches Stone' I wonder - it must be the single standing stone 300 yards / metres NW of the circle, an un-cupmarked stone which is 5 feet tall? An outlier - an alignment?

Please don't trek over to Monzie on my account, that download find was quite helpful enough - many thanks! Smile

A lot of Scottish RSCs have cup marks, I was amazed to read that the moon theory for the recumbent stones was never universally accepted, I thought it was a proven fact but it isn't, the true nature of these circles is still being debated according to Adam Welfare in his 'Great Crowns of Stone' (2011). Beautiful book btw, highly recommended.

    Hi Phaeton -

Well, we've been, gone, returned & photographed the relevant stones all round there today. I'm still in the mountains at a friend's house, but will do a full write-up of the sites for the weekend when I get back. Hope that's OK.

The journal article is - Allen, J. Romilly, “Notes on some Undescribed Stones with Cup Markings in Scotland,” in Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries Scotland, volume 16, 1882. ( http://megalithix.wordpress.com/sites/cup-ring-stones/bibliography/ )

I don't yet have Adam Welfare's Great Crowns of Stone, but it's on mi 'Wanted' list. Cool

Here's the profile of the Wicthes Stone at Monzie:

The circle and the other cup-marked stone will have to wait a bit longer before I get the stuff written-up. Soz... Embarassed
