COBERS LAITHE EARTHWORK / SETTLEMENT near Nappa

Os grid reference SD86700 53400. The Cobers Laithe ancient earthworks, settlement or camp is 3 miles north-east of Paythorne and half a mile east of Nappa. In a farmer's field on rough boggy ground a rectangular-shaped earthwork is 100 feet by 150 feet with a slight ditch at the northern and western sides. Probably an ancient camp or settlement dating from the Iron-Age. Nothing much is known about the site. I don't know whether any Archaeological digs have been carried out here. More investigation is needed at this site.

My days of camping might be over now. Last went camping at Capel Curig, north Wales in the early 70s with my boarding school. I prefer to be in a B&B or self catering cottage these days - much more comfortable.

Don't worry i'll work it out its not "rocket science". Unlike you Danny, I didn't have much of an education at the special school I attended. It wasn't meant for education, just to keep kids in some form of schooling. Terrible place though - it wrecked my early yea

No Danny have not been there as I don't drive. Will have to wait till my mate can take me.
Also, I have very elderly parents aged 89 and 87 so its difficult going to far of places. I rely a lot of what I read about sites from local books and they very rarely give a grid reference, or if they do its often not accurate. I would dearly love to go somewhere further away. Hope you understand, its frustrating, but that's life,

Apologies Danny, I think I said top right, that should be top (far) left above Dykes farm at Os co-ordinates SD.8635 2435. Don't know my right from left ! Yes, the dykes can be seen from an aerial view if you want to put one up you will need to zoom in a fair bit. But would be nice. Ray.

Hi Danny, the os grid reference is, as you say, SD.8635 2435 that's more or less in the middle of the dyke (earthwork).

A superb site, known to me as Swinden Camp as it is sited on Swinden Moor Head. It is an oval ditched earthwork of one and a half acres lying in a shallow valley and intersected by a stream. A number of 'platforms' can be made out on the site. Posible Iron Age/Romano-British settlement site.

The 'Gregory' Roman road runs past the camp.
