After all, we did ask for the facts about this project before 'Guardians of Ilkley Moor' campaign started. We still have all the reply's.

Congratulations to Dave for a brilliant interview and some level headed arguments put forward. A really great attempt at drawing attention to the campaign.

A slightly biased coverage in favour of those supporting the project sadly, and notice how it was a covert ad for Slimon and the non Yorkshire stone carver as well as for visiting the stones already in location.......Is Olivia a member of Ilkley Lit festival or related I wonder?

she did at one point describe the graffiti as DIY carvings, which is a little unfortunate in respect of criminal activity. would she describe 9/11 as DIY demolition?

Its as though people nowadays are unable to enjoy the countryside unless there is some reminder of urban life - stone benches, memorials, sculptures, art-works and other tat. Why do these f***er's (pardon my French) bother leaving their towns and cities if they find the countryside so intimidating?

Very good point LB! It's the usual city-mind 'fear' of silence; or being alone; of wanting something they find 'secure' to relate to. By adding these stupid extra titbits and tat in the countryside, it allows the neurotic something to focus on. The fear of silence, the fear of quietude, the avoidance of dream, is rampant in the people who wanna clutter our natural world. It's the usual, juvenile "make it safe" neurosis; or juvenile "tidy it up" neurosis (there's plenty of others they invent). If they can turn Nature into a park the lonely children will do it, cos the natural world either bores them or scares them.

To have nothing to relate to, and to be simply immersed in the hills alone, truly scares a lotta people - and so they add their shite, under excuses of art or whatever Freudian lacking it is they need to unfurl to give them focus; to keep their ego entertained; to reinforce their insecurities. And those of us who know the benefit of maintaining unspoilt Nature have to put up with their timidity and lack of development. Sort of.....

Can't they just bring their ipods and netbooks out with them instead of carving rubbish on the rocks? The nasty neurotic, Freudian, phobic f***kers! (and all that other loony stuff you talked about)

That might work Mikki I read only a few days ago that some US study has just found these mushrooms has a positive effect on personality, making people nicer!

I've just heard that one of those bloody 'Stanza Stones' has been carved on Pule Hill, near me! I remember last time I walked up Pule Hill being dissapointed to see at its summit another authority endorsed piece of tat, a pathetic specimen, a small standing stone that says on it, get this..."Marsden Moor Heritage Trail"!! What its purpose is I don't know. Totally unecesary and an intrusion to the atmosphere. It sits beside the site of a neolithic grave (and near to countless mesolithic sites and a Roman Road).
...and now a Stanza Stone has been carved...where does it end??!

Hmmmm.... Pule Hill ey? Memory tells me there were at least 3 prehistoric burials recovered from a site atop of that hill. If they've damaged it or built into it without a full archaeological assessment beforehand - which they've gotta provide if you ask for it - they could well be in trouble. Can you get a decent 8- or 10-figure grid reference for it, Laughing? If those Stanza Stones bastards have built into the prehistoric site, they've got some explaining to do. (tbh, even if they knew it was there, they wouldn't give a shit) But be careful with this lot: if you communicate with them, they'll shake your hand and smile at you, like politicians do, getting you 'on side' with their ways. I'm sure y' know the sort I'm on about: shallow, vacuous, money-obsessed vampires, who'd steal from their own grannies, speaking in forked-tongues. They've already got a couple of those halfwit plastic pagans on-side (y' know the sort) by such means, which they'll use as representative of the 'alternative' vote when and where needed. I don't think the erection is connected to the Stanza Stones. I'm guessing the carving is taking place lower down. The 'standing stone' is right at the very peak of the hill (will have look for ref) - I'm not sure of the precise location of the prehistoric burials.
I'm always up for a wander if you going.

I've got the info and some articles in some old journals somewhere. I'll dig 'em out. I've been meaning to write-up a profile for the Pule Hill tombs for some time, but I like seeing the site personally and getting some photos before doing a write-up.

I am fed-up of hearing the Stanza Stones justification for the crap that they are going to carve on the stones on the moors.

The comparison between pre-historic carvings, Victorian carvings & the crap that they are going to carve on the moors, just goes to show how uneducated these people are.

Did Pre-historic folk have pen & paper to doodle on? did they have OS maps to find their way around?

And as for this retarded idea of "tradition" of graffiti in Victorian times being carved on the moors - well, how many of the Victorians in Ilkley could even read or write? And the vast majority of the Victorians didn't even known about the pre-historic carvings, as they were only first noticed by a small group of educated enthusiasts from late-1860's onwards - and the people who did 'graffiti' carvings then, were oblivious of the older prehistoric carved stones, which were only just being discovered. They simply 'did not know' about such things.

Now today's Stanza Stones bunch ..... well, what can I say. They are supposed to be an educated bunch - but obviously not. Unless they are using their own ignorance to be deliberately immoral.
