Another Swastika Stone - Ilkley

Now Paulus being Paulus - had an old notebook from way-back-when he was a teenager (3 decades ago!!), when he looked at an image he had drawn in it then, it showed a swastika motif on it, so we went for a bimble to look for it.

So, whilst we were out-and-about yesterday on this very familiar territory looking for this carving, we took some images of the well know cup-and-ring stone. When we got home and looked at the images - look what we found!!

Although the carving is rather warn, we can still make it out. We are going to go back and get some more clearer images in the next few days.

So there yo go!!! There's more than one Swastika Stone in the famous Ilkley region.

The scruffy worn image was drawn in 1981, along with some adjacent carvings, and I wrote the following notes: "David Pendleton and myself came across...the complex Stone III carving which incorporates a copied attempt of the Swastika." It looked much clearer when we first found it than it did yesterday - when the lighting conditions barely allowed us to see it. We thought it was some Victorian copy when we found it as kids, and following the discovery of several of Mr Ambrose Collins rock carvings not too far away (with his initials and date to on one of the stones!), I think it safe to say that this 'swastika' was his handiwork.

We'll go back up here again next week, get a rubbing of the stone and - hopefully - some much better photos.

Hahaha!! I'm shocked - you are so gullible!! You're not trying to tell me that you have been sold on that one persons theory? You have got photo's and seen evidence that this theory is wrong!!

I have seen some of Mr Ambrose's work for misself. I would actually say that he was very professional in his designs & detail. They had a lot more morals in them day's. Why would he deface the stones with the prehistoric art on them?
He was a workman at the Semon Home - Not a Patient!

His designs on the stones that I have seen have been on vertical faces where no other carvings have appeared. His designs have got intricate, professional details to them and not some basic markings. Simple cups and lines in rock - not a chance - twas not his style!!

Sorry - but I've looked at the wider picture & I'm not sold on it!

Hmmmm....you've got a point! We need to get up & look again at the Ambrose Collins carvings. If we highlight them in chalk to see them better, then compare 'em with this recent swastika carving, I suppose 'style' (one of my major qualities! ) between the two may help us identify him as the artist, or not, as the case may be. One day this week p'raps?
