The Bomber Camp Earthworks at Os grid reference SD.825 485. Located about 1 mile south of Gisburn just off Coal Pit Lane and opposite New Ing Hill. The earthworks are in a field. This large rectangular earthwork is some 200 feet by 220 feet and most probably dates from the Romano-British period about the middle of the 4th century AD. There was an entrance at the south-east side where some post hole slots were discovered. The place was probably a villa or farmstead that was occupied by a chieftain. However, in 360-365 AD it appears to have either been abandoned or burned to the ground due to civil unrest that was spreading southwards across the north of England. In 1940 the site was excavated and an iron sword was dug up as well as pottery, including Samian-ware, that had signs of burning, and other artefacts. Another excavation took place in the 1970s. These earthworks are best seen from the air !

More information on this site can be found in the excellent book 'Journeys Through Brigantia Vol 1' by John & Phillip Dixon, Aussteiger Publications, Barnoldswick 1990.

That's within a good bike ride for me, but don't you mean to the south of Gisburn? I've added it to my list, anyway.

The earthwork is to the north of Gisburn along Coal Pit Lane, not far from Todber Caravan Park. Go across the fields for a short distance and you can't really miss it as its close by a wooded area. Happy hunting.

This is over 50 miles out and must be some kind of record it takes you just east of the Buttertubs pass above Muker into Swaledale
Colne parish church is SD 88885 40124 the term "friendly fire" comes to mind if you were giving the co-ordinates !

Okay, it is south of Gisburn, I was looking at it as if coming from Gisburn towards Blacko/Barrowford. Its about 1 mile south-east, actually. Danny doesn't always get things right, neither. Sorry about that but I'm not good at the old map reading stuff. Oh, and Danny my name is Sunbright not Sundim. You could be Qdantcommandant, perhaps !!!

My days of camping might be over now. Last went camping at Capel Curig, north Wales in the early 70s with my boarding school. I prefer to be in a B&B or self catering cottage these days - much more comfortable.

Don't worry i'll work it out its not "rocket science". Unlike you Danny, I didn't have much of an education at the special school I attended. It wasn't meant for education, just to keep kids in some form of schooling. Terrible place though - it wrecked my early yea

No Danny have not been there as I don't drive. Will have to wait till my mate can take me.
Also, I have very elderly parents aged 89 and 87 so its difficult going to far of places. I rely a lot of what I read about sites from local books and they very rarely give a grid reference, or if they do its often not accurate. I would dearly love to go somewhere further away. Hope you understand, its frustrating, but that's life,

Apologies Danny, I think I said top right, that should be top (far) left above Dykes farm at Os co-ordinates SD.8635 2435. Don't know my right from left ! Yes, the dykes can be seen from an aerial view if you want to put one up you will need to zoom in a fair bit. But would be nice. Ray.

Put a bloody sock in it Danny. Oh, and by the way John Dixon your good friend (now departed) told me he was "very upset by all the things you said about me". Perhaps you should think about that.

Well I have given it some thought, and in all the times I drove over to John’s house in Clitheroe to pick him up to go out on expeditions and drink bottles of wine in the hills with him, photo’s on TNA, or when he came over to our house for one of our meals https://northernantiquarian.forumotion.net/t497-thursday-s-evening-meal and left signed copies of his books
HE NEVER MENTIONED YOUR NAME ONCE ! but what is this contributing to Paulus's Great TNA site apart from myself correcting your map references and directions, for any other members who might just go out using yours, and as for all the “quotes” well they are yours ! including this one :-

Danny, its just what John said the last time I saw him a month before he died suddenly. But John was like that he would always accept hospitality and always saw the good side of people. He wouldn't have mentioned me but he knew there was bad feelings between yourself and me. If you were to ask me to share a glass of wine with you, I would. I'd much rather get on with people. I admit I have got things wrong, especially my grid references. I must be more careful. But, hey, its a new year so what say you we try and get on from now onwards. I'm willing if you are.

I could perhaps visit Earby when the weather gets better, if it ever does, but don't know my way around too well. Barnoldswick is the only place I know as I used to work over there in the 1970s on the canal. Bus travel I'm afraid, never learned to drive! Smile

But there would have to be a few more TNA members out with us, on the trip/picnic

I usually get on very well with everyone Danny. I don't fancy laying in a peat bog only to be discovered thousands of years later (sounds like a plot from Emmerdale). I will venture over there on one of those orange buses, the ones called Pennine, when the weather is a bit better and will let you know the details then. I would much appreciate a ride back to Nelson or what used to be called Nelson !! Cheers.
