    Little Hameldon Empty Little Hameldon

    Post  chris57T Mon Apr 18, 2016 2:07 pm

Had a walk over Hameldon Hill and Great Hameldon last week and was horrified to find that motorcyclists have started to ride over Little Hameldon chambered cairn (SD794294).  They are doing serious damage to the mound.  I've contacted Peter Iles of Lancashire County County Archaeological Service but his job finishes on 30 April.  Where do we go from here to get some protection for what must be one of Lancashire's most important prehistoric monuments?  I'd be pleased to hear of any suggestions.

I honestly don't know the answer Chris. The funding cuts are biting very hard at many levels and Archaeology is being affected by these cuts, but they are there in the background beavering away albeit quietly. Many young people don't seem to care about our ancient monuments, or maybe they don't know what they are. To these motorbike lads it might just look like a grassy mound to ride over, or they just couldn't care either way. I don't see things changing neither. We have to just hope that someone like yourself, or preservers, will come along and sort out this worsening situation. But don't hold your breath.

Little Hameldon Empty On the Nature of Things...

Post  QDanT Fri Apr 22, 2016 3:12 am

    Titus Lucretius Carus (c.99-55 BC)

No single thing abides; but all things flow.
Fragment to fragment clings-the things thus grow
Until we know and name them. By degrees
They melt, and are no more the things we know.
Globed from the atoms falling slow or swift
I see the suns, I see the systems lift
Their forms; and even the systems and the suns
Shall go back slowly to the eternal drift.
You too, oh earth-your empires, lands, and seas -
Least with your stars, of all the galaxies,
Globed from the drift like these, like these you too
Shalt go. You are going, hour by hour, like these.
Nothing abides. The seas in delicate haze
    Go off; those mooned sands forsake their place;
And where they are, shall other seas in turn
Mow with their scythes of whiteness other bays.
The seeds that once were we take flight and fly,
Winnowed to earth, or whirled along the sky,
Not lost but disunited. Life lives on.
It is the lives, the lives, the lives, that die.
They go beyond recapture and recall,
    Lost in the all-indissoluble All:-
Gone like the rainbow from the fountain's foam,
Gone like the spindrift shuddering down the squall.
Flakes of the water, on the waters cease!
Soul of the body, melt and sleep like these.
Atoms to atoms-weariness to rest -
Ashes to ashes-hopes and fears to peace!
O Science, lift aloud your voice that stills
The pulse of fear, and through the conscience thrills -
Thrills through the conscience with the news of peace -
How beautiful your feet are on the hills!

Little Hameldon Empty Raising awareness of Little Hameldon situation

    Post  chris57T Wed Jun 22, 2016 1:12 pm

After quite a struggle I've managed to get some publicity in the Lancashire Telegraph (21 June 2016) about the damage being caused to Little Hameldon:

    http://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/news/14570240.Walker____desperate____to_save_prehistoric_monument_being_damaged_by_off_road_motorcyclists/

I'm not sure I like being described as a 'desperate walker' but if it prompts someone in a position to do something to protect the monument then it's a small price to pay.  We'll have to wait and see.  Thanks for your support on the Forum.

Hello Chris, would that be the round barrow at grid reference SD 8914 3262 also known as Hameldon Pasture. There is a smaller tumulus close by. I went up there a couple of months back and could clearly hear off-road bikes just over the way. It is a great shame that these people do not respect our pre-historic past, but also like I said earlier, I don't think they care, or maybe don't realize it is a burial site. I noticed the stone circle, or what has been called a stone circle, further down the slope also had some tyre tracks going through it.

Sorry for not responding to your query - I missed it completely.  Little Hameldon is at SD 79452 29396 on Hameldon Common above Hapton near Accrington.  I went up there a couple of weeks ago and was relieved to find that there had been no more damage caused by motorbikes.  It really deserves to be fenced off and have an information board to explain its significance.
