    KING'S HILL MOUND, PLEASINGTON< LANCASHIRE SD 631 261

Above the causeway ford on the River Darwen the land rises steeply to the semi-conical summit of King’s Hill. This summit ‘cone’ is more of a mound and does not appear to be natural, and as it stands only yards away from the line of the secondary Roman road between Wigan and Ribchester it may well be the remains of a contemporary structure – signal station, burial mound, or other, worth investigation.

Visited this place, there is a great ambience here, very peaceful and in beautiful surroundings.

The area where the mound is situated overlooks a gorge of the River Darwen. If this really is an ancient earthwork it would have been huge and must have belonged to someone of great importance.

My problem with it is though is whether it is indeed a genuine burial mound and not a result of 18th century earthmoving and engineering due to the construction of the Rail bridge that crosses the river darwen within metres of it , or maybe as a result of earthmoving when the golf club was established later during the 20th century.

The mound itself is not visible on either of the photos above. On the map the mound is just above the "W" bit of "Weir".
A friend of mine worked as a groundsman on the golf course for years and I asked himwhat he knew of the said mound....very little im afraid though he knew it was called "kings hill" having been told that it was named such after King James I stood upon it and killed that nights dinner there.
Now I always thought the King knighted a loin of lamb at hoghton tower so I cant imagine that he went out that day to hunt for sheep, so im not buying that one.

Anyway, I'll go there in the next week or two and take some pictures of the place and upload them here.

    Were getting closer cheers QdanT.
but just to be precise our mound is bang on the top right corner of that red square on the map and just out of view in the image.
id do it myself but im using a phone for internet at the moment and have no idea if and how i might cut and paste things.
just one more time please pal im certain that you'll nail it this time! the train line should be just in view as the steel fence to stop trespassing on it actually straddles our mound running straight up and over the summit.

soddit ill try and get down there with my camera tomorrow.

for anyone else wanting to get there go down links lane until you reach a 'private road' on your right. completly ignoring the "private" bit follow this road until it ends at lodge house, carry on past and along the fairway heading west about half a mile yor there
