Os grid reference close to SD.878375. The spring stands at the side of Barkerhouse Road just opposite Lower Townhouse farm. It is about 1 mile north of Nelson town centre and close to Marsden Park Golf Course.

The spring gushes from a round-shaped hole in the wall and down into a 7 foot long by 2 foot deep stone trough and then out through an overflow at the side. Down at the side the water flows into a grid and under the road. The hefty stone trough sits on a collection of supporting stones, and on the side of the trough there is some carved indentation work in a sort of long panel. It no doubt weighs several tons. It is always full of water even in drought conditions; indeed I have never known it to be less than half full.

The water looks quite clean and refreshing when it gushes out from the wall, but looks more murky inside the trough. I think the spring has been here for hundreds of years, though it is probably not an ancient spring / well. In times gone by it has been used by horses, and when Catlow quarries were in operation in the Victorian period horses taking stone down to Chaffer's sidings would stop and have a refreshing drink at the trough.

There is another interesting well (now restored) close to the Shooters Arms public house at Catlow grid reference SD.881372. Worth taking a look at.

Hi Danny, my computer crashed due to a nasty little virus and caused the loss of photos and documents. My security thingy has, I think, managed to deal with it, but checking now to see what's lost and what can be got back. Thanks Danny. Cheers. Ray.
