    Hi there -
I recently found an 1819 reference that told of "an ancient stone circle with a heap of stones in the middle" near the Handsome Cross, a mile north of High Bradfield, NW Sheffield, S. Yorks. It sounds as if it was/is an old ring-cairn. Does anyone have any further info about this place?
    Here's hoping - Smile

Off hand, without any digging all i have is the info from Paul and Victoria Morgans book "Rock around the Peak", there it states "A third lost circle, reported by antiquarians, reputedly stood near Handsome Cross on Bradfield common (GRSK26?94?). Mentioned by Watson in 1776 and Hunter in 1819, it has now completely dissapeared, probably suffering yet again at the hands of quarry men or wall builders in the 19th century.
Watson noted that it consisted of twelve stones in a ring about 8 yards in diameter and possibly had a cairn in the centre".

sorry if reproducing this text here brings up copyright issues, delete it if need be.

I've got a copy of the 1776 text - will have a look. But Hunter's 1819 aint in mi library. I have a feeling that some remains of the site can still be found. Sounds daft - but this nose of mine is twitching as if it's still in existence.

No copyright issues troubled at all. You can quote excerpts from just about owt without infringing copyright on stuff, as you gave credit to the book & authors. No trouble done! Wink
