THE SWINDEN CROSS-HEAD, Colne Empty THE SWINDEN CROSS-HEAD, Colne

In the 19th century a fragment of an Anglo-Saxon cross was dug up in the grounds of Alkincoats Hall between Colne and Foulridge - this area was probably once an early Medieval settlement that was taken over by Knights Hospitallers in the 12th and 13th centuries. However, the carved cross-head was lost for a long period of time but was thought to have come to light again in more recent times when the sewerage works were being built at Swinden on the boundary and Colne and Nelson. If the cross had stood at Swinden then it almost certainly marked the boundaries between Colne and Marsden (Merclesden).

This fragment was thought to be almost certainly the same as that found at Alkincoats Hall. The piece of cross-head would have adorned the top of a late Saxon / early Medieval cross-shaft dating from the 10th-11th century. The carvings of knotwork interlacing on the arms and central boss were thought reminiscent of Anglo-Norse work - similar to the crosses at Whalley and Burnley.

I believe that the cross fragment was housed in St Bartholomew's parish church at Colne, but it is now housed in the reference department at Colne library along with another cross-head (intact) that may date from the same period. What a shame that the shaft has long gone - because almost certainly it would have looked resplendant. I have given the O.S grid reference for Colne Parish church here SD.888954.

THE SWINDEN CROSS-HEAD, Colne Empty De Lacy

Interesting post as I have recently been looking at the connections of the De Lacys to our area, one of who was a Knights Hospitaler and owned most of this area after it was granted to them after the Norman Conquest. It has recently been found that they once held residence on the site of Southfield House near Catlow. Later down the line the De Lacys were known to have assisted Richard the Lionheart on I think it was the second crusade. So the Hospitalers connection could well be true. Their emblem was a black cross on a white background.

Thanks for the comment Viking. The De Lacys may have held the land at Alkincoats. There are two cross sections upstairs in Colne Library, confusingly, one is called The Colne Cross whereas the other, which may be wrongly named, is being referred to as The Swinden Hall Cross! Ray.

This is over 50 miles out and must be some kind of record it takes you just east of the Buttertubs pass above Muker into Swaledale
Colne parish church is SD 88885 40124 the term "friendly fire" comes to mind if you were giving the co-ordinates !

Grid-ref's correct there Ray! spot-on Check this out if you have trouble with grid-refs - just zoom in & out, home in on the map, and watch the coordinates bottom-right. You can add your own coordinates top-left. You'll get the hang of it. Hope the link works (just click 'OK' to get rid of the boxes if they appear):

That's absolutely brilliant Paul, thanks. I think I have the hang of these grid refs now. I also found a Check Os grid refs website where you just right click on the place and all the info including long and lat comes up in a box. Oh, and I have now got my plastic Romer from Ebay. So "should" be okay now. Phew. bounce lol!
